The Brain Charity

Two of our volunteers, who met thanks to The Brain Charity, have tied the knot despite COVID-19 restrictions.

Andrew and Pam Wennell said ‘I do’ at The Royal Liver Building on October 21 – exactly two years to the day since they first got together.

The couple met in March 2018 after Dave Kelly, the founder of Liverpool charity Daisy Inclusive UK, gave a talk at The Brain Charity.

Andrew, who was already a volunteer at The Brain Charity, went along to Daisy Inclusive UK’s centre in Everton after hearing the talk.

He joined the charity’s choir, and caught the attention of Pam, who was undertaking a work experience placement there, when he performed Bohemian Rhapsody in his own inimitable style.

Pam and Andrew discovered they both came from the south of England & had moved up to Liverpool in the same year, just 11 months apart.

They quickly introduced each other to their now-shared loves of boccia and barn dancing, before Andrew popped the question on an ABBA-themed cruise aboard a ferry in April 2019.

Earlier this year, the happy couple had nearly completed all the planning for their big day – originally earmarked for July 21, 2020 – and were feeling proud of themselves.

Then, Covid-19 arrived. Coronavirus restrictions meant Andrew and Pam were married in October in front of just their two registrars, two witnesses – staff members at The Liver Building – and their photographer.

But so many delighted friends and family joined to watch proceedings via Zoom, they exceeded the maximum number of people able to access the live stream!

Luckily, despite the global pandemic the newlyweds were still be able to feel like rockstars on their big day. The morning of the wedding, they travelled from a hotel in Cheshire to Liverpool by train, with station staff treating them like celebrities by taking photos, making an announcement over the speakers and even playing ‘Here Comes the Bride’.

After the ceremony, Andrew and Pam stopped off at the Mersey Ferries terminal at Pier Head before heading for a meal and a game of crazy golf and then finally returning to their hotel.

The couple even still got to have a honeymoon to Madeira, after their first two honeymoons – a cruise and a trip to Tenerife – were both cancelled.

Andrew and Pam said they’re thrilled their wedding turned out to be a really special and wonderful day – and we at The Brain Charity are delighted we got to play a small role in their epic love story.
